SA's shocking rape rate raised in Parliament

South Africa's shocking rate of rape and child abuse has been raised in Parliament - as a precursor to the "16 Days of Activism for No violence Against Women and Children" which starts on November 25. The message to every South African is to make a difference to stop abuse.
The campaign was highlighted in Parliament's National Council of Provinces. South Africans going about their daily business. But many carry a heavy burden the burden of having being raped or abused.
Cheryl Gilwald, the deputy minister of correctional services said: "The magnitude of this problem needs the effort of every South African it is too big and it is an indictment on our democracy."
Sixteen days have been set aside to campaign against abuse, events have been planned in all nine provinces. Symbolically, prisoners will build 16 houses for 16 women in 16 days.
MPs have suggested ways to stop abuse. Some say names of abusers should be posted in public places. Others say more should be done to stop alcohol abuse. This year, the campaign aims to involve men more - to spread the message that violence should be shut out of our society.
